Gambling regulators of France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the UK joined last week the Italian online gambling regulator in Rome to discuss about the future of the European gambling sector that might lead to some improvements as well as some concerns especially for game suppliers.
An improvement might arise from the development of common technical standards and the transfer of test results between jurisdictions in order to allow operators to rely on economies of scale given from holding a license in different regulated markets. Indeed at the moment a major issue is given by the lack of consistency between regulations of different jurisdictions which forces operators to start from scratch the setting up and the technical standard approval whenever they approach a new jurisdiction.
A concern for game suppliers might arise by the apparent fight against them by regulators which are very wiling to “deter suppliers from providing unlicensed suppliers with products competing with licensed products“.
I have already discussed about the potential introduction of a licensing regime for game suppliers declared by the Italian gambling regulator. It is still unclear whether this will happen but the general feeling is that suppliers will have to change (and partially already did) their approach if they are willing to continue offering their games in the main European jurisdictions.
Therefore the matter shall be closely monitored since new developments might occur in the short term.
